A SOCIAL media star has gone viral after a series of brilliant deadpan London pub reviews.
Jimmy McIntosh AKA @deadpubs has reviewed a number of the capital’s drinking establishments, this time tackling ‘the UK’s largest pub’ in the shape of the new Brewdog super-pub in Waterloo.
The Scottish brewer opened the 27,500 sq ft. boozer to much fanfare in 2022, but McIntosh jokingly (we think) describes the pub as being ‘built for people who, on some basic conceptual level, find pubs incredibly boring’.
As he guides viewers around, he asks: “Is the pub not enough for you? Well, look over here. There’s a podcast studio, a coffee shop, this bowling alley, train beers, ice cream truck, photo booth. It’s no one’s local, but then again, it doesn’t really need to be.”
The heady price of a pint doesn’t escape the razor wit of McIntosh either as he ponders the range of expensive and bizarrely named beers on offer.
“Drinks wise, you know what you’re getting with a Brewdog. Namely, a vast rotation of fruity beers with silly names. But with the cheapest pint at £6.95, it meant that my meagre bellboy’s salary would be stretched very thin indeed for the rest of the month. It gets a six. For interiors, the pub gets a four. You can never accuse a place this slick of being dirty.”
He adds: “This is drinking in modern Britain. 2013’s idea of quirky, more than a little infantile, and possessing more in common with a high street escape room than a traditional boozer. For this overly stimulating ambiance, the pub scores a three out of 10.”
Commenters are hailing McIntosh’s work as brilliant, with one calling it “The best account on TikTok”, while another calls it their “Favourite ever Tiktok series – poetry.”
McIntosh summarises his experience at the ‘infernal pint creche’ by likening the behemoth boozer to Dubai Formula 1.
“Despite everything, I couldn’t help but be mildly impressed by the pub, in much the same way I am with Dubai Formula 1, or those really big planes that look like beluga whales. But just because you can build a gigantic booze temple in the inner sanctum of Britain’s third busiest railway station, it doesn’t mean you necessarily should.”
