A WOMAN has revealed how she finished with her husband the day after their wedding because he ignored her one simple request – to not smash their wedding cake into her face.
The woman wrote into US magazine Slate’s advice column Dear Prudence and explained that she got married but is now hoping to get a divorce due to her husband’s disrespect.
She revealed she told him the day after her wedding that it was ‘over’ but many friends told her to give him a second chance and not give up at the first hurdle.
“I got married just before Christmas and am hoping to be divorced or annulled by the end of January,” the woman said.
“My only hard-and-fast rule was that he would not rub cake in my face at the reception,” she said.
“Being a reasonable man who knows me well, he didn’t,” she continued. “Instead, he grabbed me by the back of the head and shoved my head down into it.”
“I left. Next day I told him we were done. I am standing by that,” the bride admitted.
The ridiculous ‘cake smash’ trend is meant to be a loving humorous gesture at a wedding, apparently it began way back in Roman times with barley cakes being crumbled over the the bride’s head for good luck.
However, in recent times the cake smash has become a viral video moment for those wanting to show off, waste money and ruin their clothes. On TikTok alone the #cakesmash hashtag has racked up nearly 450m views.
Family and friends of the bride have tried to convince her to give him a ‘second chance’. They have also said that she is ‘overreacting’ due to her struggles with being claustrophobic.
“I am VERY claustrophobic after a car accident years ago, and I absolutely panicked at being shoved into a cake and held there,” she explained. “Everyone is so united and confident in their assurance I am making a terrible mistake that I wonder if they are right.”
She ended the post by asking if she should give her husband another chance.
Agony Aunt Prudie didn’t think so, because the groom’s prank was an immediate ‘red flag’.
Prudence wrote: “Everyone’s sure you’re making a mistake, but they’re not the ones who have to wake up every day with a man whose behaviour massively turns them off. You are. So you only have to listen to yourself.
“I think what he did was a red flag about not respecting you and your wishes – to say nothing of the physical aggression – but even if it wasn’t, the fact that you really didn’t like it is enough.”
The post has infuriated social media users who think she should ditch him immediately.
One user on Reddit posted: “She asked for one thing and he couldn’t respect that? And it wasn’t a spur of the moment thing either.”
“He doesn’t know her at all, he doesn’t respect her, and he told her loud and clear that her wishes don’t matter. She expresses a specific boundary, he bulldozes like an asshole,” said another.
With a third weighing in: “Wow. That’s indicative of a mean heart. Why would anyone want to be married to anyone who would violate your trust.”
Another user desperate to see him get his just desserts, wanted him arrested, saying: “Divorce him yes but maybe also arrest him.”
