THE infamous, incredible and highly idiotic road trip from the 1994 epic Dumb and Dumber has been hilariously recreated by two motorbike journalists.
Riding ‘nuts to butts’ for four days straight from the cold and windy plains of Nebraska to the freezing peaks of Aspen, with no plan and no suspension, burning through two and a half rear tyres and climbing over 15,000ft was no mean feat.
In the film Harry and Lloyd get stranded in Nebraska and have no money for supplies or petrol to get to the renowned ski resort. Lloyd swaps the ‘Mutt Cutts’ dog van for a minibike so they could continue their mission to Colorado and return the briefcase to Mary Swanson (you don’t need us to explain the plot).
“Traded the van for it straight up… I can get 70 miles to the gallon on this hog.” Lloyd boasted to Harry in the movie.
And he wasn’t too far wrong as Zack Courts and his buddy Ari Henning averaged 54mpg, albeit with a slighter bigger engine.
In all the trip cost them about £17 in fuel, an absolute steal to arrive at one of world’s premium snow resorts.
“So you’re tellin’ me there’s a chance!”
Doubting whether they had the ability to complete the journey didn’t stop Courts and Henning tirelessly recreating every aspect of the ‘Hog’ as accurately as possible.
Although the chaps opted for sensible shoes and proper motorbike helmets, rather than ill-fitting cycle lids, apart from that every element was as close to the original adventure as possible largely thanks to their video-production team-mate, Lynna.
The bike had lawnmower-size wheels bolted to a spindly stretched frame, with a raccoon tail hanging off the hazard-striped sissy bar (a bar at the rear of the bike that allows the passenger to recline against it) according to the detail covered in the building of the bike.
Using an image from the original film Courts and Henning painstakingly recreated the minibike for just £1,125, a tiny fraction of the £40,000 the actual move prop sold for at auction recently.
Originally they had planned to use an existing minibike frame but finding a bike to fit two fully-grown men was an issue so in the end they fabricated a full-blown replica from a DIY kit.
They opted for a bigger 6.5-horsepower engine rather than the 3.5-horsepower that was used in the movie bike. This gave them a fighting chance of making it up the steep slippery inclines of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
They then set about accessorising with the aforementioned racoon tail, a basket, bell and the all important tassels.
Travelling on the flat Nebraska plains in the relative warmth wasn’t too much of a problem for the ‘Hog’ even when fully loaded.
But as the pair hit the snow-capped peaks of Aspen they crawled to a painful 15 mph chug, all whilst being given the middle finger or huge grins from fellow motorists in equal measure.
After multiple run-ins with the cops, mostly with them chuckling and allowing them on their way, they finally trundled into Aspen.
Frustratingly none of the sights they encountered looked familiar as Dumb and Dumber was actually shot in Breckenridge, Colorado.
When they finally stepped off the minibike the lack of mudguards made it look like they had pissed themselves, which while in keeping with the movie, didn’t land well with the great and the good of the prestigious mountain resort.
By their maths the roadtrip would have cost Harry and Lloyd just £8 in fuel looking back at the prices in 1994.
And while they were expecting Mary to invite them ‘Right in for tea and strumpets!’ they just had to settle for the fact that they had made the nearly impossible, possible.
