AIRBAGS on a motorbike would probably be about as useful as ashtrays. But what about airbags in bikers’ trousers? Now you’re pumped, aren’t you?
Swedish brand Mo’cycle have created a pair of ยฃ400 jeans that inflate in seconds, protecting your lower body in case of an accident.
The jeans are completely reusable, coming with interchangeable CO2 cartridges and can be worn as normal jeans and washed easily.
‘The jeans are just as comfortable as any other pants, and are made with water repellent, breathable and abrasion resistant fabric,” Mo’cycle said on their website.
‘The fabric is extremely abrasion resistant, but looks and feels like regular denim.
“Before activation the airbag is completely invisible but deploys within milliseconds of being triggered.”
The jeans are attached to the bike when being ridden, but as soon as the rider begins to come off the seat due to an impact the tether detaches from the jeans much like the ‘dead man’s switch’ used on boats and other vehicles.
This detachment triggers a spring-loaded piston that pierces the CO2 cartridge, expanding the airbag in seconds – all before the rider crashes to the ground.
The jeans also cover areas on the body that have previously not been protected from impact collisions.
Mo’cycle explained: ‘To protect the spinal column’s first bone with airbag technology is ground-breaking because spinal column injuries are the ones paralysing motorcycle riders.”
Designers also claim the material is stronger and lighter than steel, while the jeans also include armour with pads on the knees to protect kneecaps.
Inventor Moses Shahrivar added: ‘The only impact protection you have in regular motorcycle jeans is basically the knee protectors and sometimes you get hip protectors.
‘”injuries occur on the lower body in a serious motorcycle accident, so for 17 years I’ve been trying to solve this problem.
“What the airbag did for cars is about to happen to us motorcycle riders.”
Inflatable motorcycle kit isn’t a new phenomen but this appears to be the first set of pants. Other bike blow-ups for safety include jackets and even helmets.
And what about non-bikers who spend years down the gym trying to sculp a set of bulging thighs? Thanks to an explosion in your pants they can now be your in seconds.
