ANYONE who’s seen a Mafia film knows Italian gangsters rarely smile.
Despite their vast ill-gotten wealth, there’s usually not a lot to smile about anyway – everyone wants to kill you, including your brother and your wife, while the constant feeling of being watched means you can rarely switch off.
Any chance of seeing your local Don joking around in public looks even less likely now after one of Italy’s most dangerous mobsters was caught after 11 years on the run – after just celebrating his beloved Napoli winning the league title at a restaurant.
Vincenzo La Porta is believed to be connected to Napoli’s Camorra crime syndicate, which inspired the brilliantly brutal Sky series Gomorrah. He is facing jail back home after being convicted in his absence for criminal association, tax evasion and fraud.
The 60-year-old was one of Italy’s 100 most dangerous fugitives until he was spotted celebrating Napoli’s first Serie A title win in 33 years at a restaurant in Greece a few months ago.
Investigators who had been monitoring him for months and were waiting for a clue to his exact whereabouts flew to Corfu, where they then captured him as he tried to escape on a scooter.

Police said in a statement: “Betraying him was his passion for soccer and for the Napoli team. With the championship victory, La Porta couldn’t resist celebrating.”
The villain, who was supposedly working as a chef and has had a son aged nine from his time on the run, is now being held in jail, facing extradition and a possible 14 years in prison back home.
And that’s certainly nothing to smile about.
