In the nanny-state we live in, every day is jam-packed full of red tape, rules and regulations.
As we all know rules are meant to be broken and YouTuber Max Fosh has set about breaking a whole host of intriguing and nearly forgotten laws including pestering postmen (or women), getting drunk with cows and carrying wood on a footpath.
Interfering with postal workers
According to the 1904 Postal Services Act, it is illegal to distract and interfere with postal workers during their duties. Fosh took this as an opportunity to have an illegal conversation with a postal worker, interfering with his work with some inane questioning about the size of the NFL and Taylor Swift’s Instagram following. The postal worker remained completely unaware Fosh was breaking a law by doing so.
Carrying wood on a footpath
Incredibly there is a 1839 law under the Metropolitan Police Act which prohibits carrying timber, planks, or bars of wood along a footway without the intention to load or unload it into a vehicle.
Armed with a plank of wood, Max set out to break this bizarre law. He made his way through the streets while raising eyebrows and getting strange looks from passers-by, but the police didn’t seem to bothered.
Drunk in charge of a cow
The most unusual and entertaining part of Max’s adventure involved breaking the 1872 Licensing Act. This law made it illegal to be drunk in charge of a horse, cow, or steam engine. With his friend Zac, a cow called Rosie, Max got sufficiently sozzled and paraded Rosie through central London, delighting onlookers and even catching the attention of the BBC Breakfast show.
Despite the commotion and rule-breaking, the cops didn’t have a problem with it at all. They appeared quite relaxed about the whole situation and they weren’t prepared to nick him despite his obvious law breaking.
The jury is still out
There are a host of old and obscure laws in the UK that literally make no sense in this day and age. Incredible that as well as being drunk in charge of a cow, it is also against the law to be drunk in a public place or a pub. I would say that is one thing we definitely won’t drink to.
