AN ABANDONED theme-park that has become a playground for urban explorers could soon get a £65m revamp as a holiday resort.
The former Pleasure Island in Cleethorpes, Lincs, has been derelict since dwindling numbers forced its closure in 2016.
Pictures show attactions on the 54-acre site including dodgems, train rides and food courts eerily abandoned while rubbish piles high above the jungle of undergrowth.
It’s a far cry from the heyday of the park, which opened in 1993 and used to attract visitors from far and wide.
While it remains popular on sites like Abandoned UK for its derelict beauty, there have been plans ongoing for several years to start all over again.
And they have now moved a step closer with redevelopment proposals including two hotels with around 222 rooms and an on-site casino clearing another hurdle.
The new development will also house 272 holiday lodges, as well as shops including a Lidl, Costa and a garden centre, The Sun reports.
There had been several concerns about its redevelopment, including from the Environment Agency who feared the lodges could create a flood risk and become waterlogged.
But after revisions were put forward, including an agreement not to use the holiday homes in winter, that objection was withdrawn.
The EA stated that it is now “satisfied that the additional modelling undertaken is appropriate”.
Before tourists start packing up their poker visors and booking in though, there are more hoops to jump through.
A survey has found revealed that the site is home to several bird species, while Natural England claim the proposed development could have “potential significant effects on the Humber Estuary Special Protection Area”.
Another meeting is planned next month, and developers will be hoping the site doesn’t join these stunning examples of some of the most beautiful abandoned places on Earth – including a Soviet prison and a city under water.
