TO be honest, Swift Half wasnโt sure which emotion was winning when we read that one of the remaining 258 bunkers in the UK has just been sold for double the asking price, at ยฃ48,000.
The Cumbrian bunker known as the Royal Observer Post, was built in the 1950s and specifically designed to survive a nuclear attack.
From the online images it struck us as an ideal place to hide away from the world for a few days.
Being positioned 15 feet below ground meant no physical window to the outside world. I can only imagine that this was advertised as a major selling point. The lucky owner therefore be spared from watching the fall out of a nuclear attack or zombie apocalypse played out in real time.
The Lake District bunker would have attracted considerable interest from commuters to Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds as it has good links with Dent Station.
Having had time to reflect on this, itโs probably a profound sense of regret that I felt when confronted with the realisation that at 48 years of age I still donโt own a nuclear bunker.
This potentially cramped but reassuringly impenetrable space, 15 feet below ground level, boasts enough space to house 3 people, enough food and water for 14 days, a landline (probably not used since 2007) and most importantly, the holy grail of the mod cons, built in wifi, seems an absolute steal at ยฃ48k.
This highly sought after property, that from the prospectus looked to have been recently decorated in subtle tones of ash cloud grey (delightful), was the last lot in an online auction from SDL Property Auctions.
This recent sale apparently had a high level of interest. 65 bidders, including 25 people who were actually brave enough to leave their 2024 post pandemic, work from home bunker, to investigate a potential holiday option bunker.
The initial guide price of ยฃ15,000 to ยฃ20,000 was about what I remember spending a year on wet wipes and am now spending a year on crisps, seems hugely underpriced, especially when you learn that includes its own parking space!
Iโve just set a number of email alerts with nuclear-holiday-bunkers-2-you.com . I’ll let you know how I get on.
I hope wherever you are in the World youโre okay.
P.S. Unless you’re in Cumbria chilling out in a newly acquired nuclear bunker! If so I hope youโre choking on a biscuit brown and canโt find wifi password.
